November 2018: An Elkhart Icon Being Restored to Its Former Glory
MISHAWAKA (November 21, 2018) – The Hotel Elkhart was originally built by a collection of civic leaders in 1923 and served as “Northern Indiana’s Finest Hotel” for decades thereafter. After serving as affordable apartments since the mid-1970’s, the Hotel Elkhart will once again offer the finest overnight lodging in the region thanks to a $15 million project led by Cressy Commercial Real Estate.
Upon completion in the Spring of 2020, the Hotel Elkhart will offer 93 full-service boutique guest rooms, a regionally branded café, a taproom/bar, breakout meeting space, along with a fully-renovated 9th floor Athenian Ballroom offering outstanding views from an expansive rooftop deck.
Cressy Commercial Real Estate, led by Ed Bradley, says the Hotel Elkhart project is a clear indication of the momentum of the downtown as evidenced by the Elkhart Health and Aquatic Center as well as the projects associated with the River District Project. “We are thrilled to be a part of the next chapter in Elkhart’s story and our partnership with the City leaders and the Regional Development Authority will allow us to undertake the largest privately led redevelopment project in generations in Elkhart,” said Bradley.
The development group has been awarded funding from the State of Indiana’s Regional Cities Initiative. “The South Bend – Elkhart Region is investing in its future through quality of place projects like the Hotel Elkhart which transforms a largely unused space into a tourism and commercial destination for downtown Elkhart,” said Dr. Pete McCown, president of the Community Foundation of Elkhart County and Regional Development Authority board member. “The availability of hotel rooms adds a critical component to the overall vision for the future of downtown Elkhart and complements other anchor projects that together will create a thriving urban environment where top talent will choose to visit, live, work and play.”
The City of Elkhart has also been a key partner as they have plans to make improvements to the surrounding streetscaping, existing parking garage and the ingress/egress on Marion Street. “The return of a hotel to downtown Elkhart is symbolic of a reenergized community with demand being driven by strategic investments in the immediate area, including the world-class health, fitness, and aquatics center,” said Elkhart Mayor Tim Neese. “This restoration is one of several significant projects contributing to our record-breaking economic development – all of which grows our tax base and enhances our ability to make needed investments throughout the City. The City of Elkhart is proud to facilitate this project and believes its presence in our Arts and Entertainment District will invite more visitors to experience our vibrant, growing community,” said Mayor Neese.
The ceremonial ground breaking for the project will take place on December 6th at 4pm at 500 South Main Street and will include exciting announcements regarding project partners as well as specifics about the food and beverage offerings in the project.
